"Governor Cuomo announced that New York State will begin accepting applications for the new 'Get On Your Feet' Loan Forgiveness Program on December 31."
We laud the governor's effort to assist our recent graduates with student loans and we urge Governor Andrew Cuomo to take similar action and grant relief for current students in the form of a tuition freeze. This program is an important step towards the right direction.
However, we should not lose sight that not all CUNY students attend college "tuition-free" and even some students that do attend "tuition-free" still have to take student loans to cover other ancilliary costs like textbook, supplies, transportation, and living expenses.
At the root of student loans are the rising cost of tuition and stagnant financial aid awards. Lets now focus the issue of tuition.
