Legislative director

Overview

The University Student Senate (USS) of the City University of New York (CUNY) was founded in 1972 with the mission of preserving the accessibility, affordability, and excellence of higher education within the City University of New York; the USS delegates are responsible for the representative governance of the 275,000 students of the 25 CUNY campuses. The USS Executive director is responsible for maintaining an operational office, managing office staff and the execution of the projects and initiatives undertaken by the senate. The legislative director reports to the executive director and the chairperson of the university student senate. The legislative director is expected to have an effective working relationship with the Vice Chair for legislative affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Establishing working relationships with Borough Presidents, City wide offices, with a specific focus on the City Council Higher Education Committee and the New York State Higher Education Committee
  • Lending advice to members of USS on Legislative issues
  • Managing USS social media and communications platforms
  • Working with other student organizations to shape a cohesive message for CUNY on legislative issues, including but not limited to SGA Presidents, CUNY Rising Alliance, the PSC, state, and federal student advocacy groups.
  • Assisting and organizing students in communicating with legislators through meetings, testimonies, petitions, etc.
  • Serving as secretary to the USS Plenary
  • Assisting in the crafting of resolutions, agendas, and other voting items for USS meetings

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher degree
  • Demonstrated track record of leadership development and/or education programming
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must have excellent time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize
  • Must possess an understanding of the cultural, social, educational and recreational needs of a diverse university community
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and social media platforms
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule
  • Must be available to attend monthly USS Plenary sessions, Steering Committee Meetings, and all USS events
  • USS and CUNY student government leadership experience preferred

$40,000 – $47,000 / Year
